By the time people are reading this, the calendar will have rolled over to 2020. Because of closures at our printer and Canada Post, the Dec. 27 paper was printed the week before and the Banner office was semi-closed for the week of Christmas. Apart from some very big news鈥� the discovery of a body and subsequent murder investigation鈥� it鈥檚 been pretty quiet over the last week. This break gave everyone a well deserved chance to reflect on the year that passed and look ahead to the next one.

Earlier this month, the federal government gave Canadian businesses an early Christmas present. On Dec. 9, Finance minister Bill Morneau announced plans to tax tech giants on the revenue earned by their Canadian operations. The move is something many Canadian companies have been calling for and will help create a more level playing field.

Thank you Santa! Thank you for this most unexpected Christmas gift; the gift of federal Conservative leader Andrew Scheer stepping down. The announcement on Thursday, Dec. 12 of Scheer鈥檚 resignation came as a complete shock to me. But while I was surprised by the decision, I can鈥檛 say that it bothered me all that much, because, quite honestly Andrew Scheer never connected with me as a voter. I was not alone in that disconnect, as it was Scheer鈥檚 inability to resonate with some voters that ultimately led to his undoing. Well,鈥� that and the alleged secret slush fund for his kids鈥� tuition,鈥� but mostly the disconnect.
