Weekend sports wrap: Regals win midget AA championship in Neepawa; Farmers win MSBL regular season finale

The following is a recap of what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .

Regals win midget AA championship in Neepawa

The Rock Lake Regals won the midget AA baseball championship in Neepawa over the weekend.

The Regals, who went undefeated in the event with a 6-0 record, wound up defeating the Brandon Knights 2-0 in the championship final on Sunday.

Rock Lake advanced to the final after defeating Altona, while Brandon doubled up Oak River in the other semifinal.

The event had three pools of 12 teams in total, including the host Neepawa club, who finished 2-2 at the event, falling to Oak River 6-4 in a quarter-final.  

Meanwhile, Bonvital won the provincial mosquito AA championship in Winkler, defeating St. James in the final; the host Altona club won the provincial peewee AA championship, defeating Portage in the championship game; while Winkler won the bantam AA title in Dauphin, destroying Portage 13-2 in the final.

Lastly, St. James won the provincial senior AA all-stars championship over the weekend, defeating Stonewall 7-2 in the championship game.

The Border West League all-stars were the lone Westman-based squad to qualify for the semifinals, but the team lost to eventual winner St.James by a score of 5-3.

 

Farmers win last regular season game

The Neepawa Farmers won their last regular season game in the Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ Senior Baseball League on Sunday night.

The Farmers defeated the Dodgers 6-5 in Oak River to finish the regular season with a 3-17 record.

Jason Vinnell picked up the win on the mound for Neepawa, going five innings, allowing four hits and three runs, while striking out four Dodgers’ batters, while Josh Loewen went 2-for-3 at the plate as he drove in two runs for the Farmers.

Neepawa will now head to Oak River once again on Monday night to battle the Dodgers in a one game playoff. The winner will then take on the regular season pennant winner Brandon Cloverleafs in a best-of-five semifinal series, which begins on Friday night.

The Reston Rockets will battle the Brandon Marlins in the other semifinal. That series gets underway on Wednesday.

 

Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ under-18 squad finishes fifth

The Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ 18-and-under women’s volleyball team finished fifth at the National Team Challenge Cup in Winnipeg on Sunday.

The squad defeated New Brunswick 3-2 (21-25, 25-11, 18-25, 25-12, 15-11) in the fifth place match.

The Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ squad included Killarney’s Rylie Dickson as well as Brandon University Bobcat recruit Nikki Majewski.

Meanwhile, in the men’s event in Gatineau, Que., Team Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ finished eighth after losing the seventh-place match 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 29-27) to Ontario 2.

The Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ team included Bobcat recruit Bruce Akubukaka.


Magic win title

The Westman Magic are this year’s senior B provincial softball champions.

The Magic defeated the Winnipeg Lightning 9-4 in the tiebreaker game for first place on Sunday at Simplot Park in Brandon.

Cejay Hilhorst scored three times for the Magic in the win.

Meanwhile, Brandon also hosted the provincial under-14 A girls softball championship. After all was said and done, the South Interlake Phillies wound up taking home the title, defeating the Smitty’s Terminators 5-3 in the final.
