Weekend sports wrap: Farmers fall in doubleheader to Rockets; Telus Cup west regionals coming to Dauphin

The following is a recap of what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .
MSBL: Farmers losing streak hits nine games
The Neepawa Farmers’ struggles continued over the weekend in the Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ Senior Baseball League.
The Farmers dropped both games of a doubleheader in Reston on Sunday.
Rockets pitcher Cole Stober allowed seven hits, while striking out 11 batters in a complete game shutout as the Rockets won the opening game 9-0.
Tramer Ray had two RBI for the Rockets, while Rory Tycoles had three hits, an RBI and a run scored for Reston in the win.
Jordan Robertson ended up with the loss on the mound for Neepawa, allowing seven hits and five runs in four innings of work.
In the second game, the Farmers held a 2-1 lead until the bottom of the eighth when the Rockets scored three runs en route to a 4-3 win.
Tycoles had another big game with three hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Rockets, who now sit with a 4-4-1 record.
Zane Sawyer pitched eight innings, scattering 12 hits, allowing two runs to pick up the win for Reston.
Farmers pitcher Garrett Rempel took the loss on the bump, allowing four runs on 11 hits over eight innings.
Cam Tibbett had four hits and an RBI for the Farmers, who now sit with a 1-9 record.
The other games on Sunday saw the first place Brandon Cloverleafs play two games. In one game, the ’Leafs defeated the Oak River Dodgers 6-1, while in the other contest, the Cloverleafs lost 1-0 to their city rival Marlins.
There were no games on Friday as both contests that were scheduled were rained out.
Telus Cup west regionals coming to Dauphin
Hockey Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ recently announced that Dauphin will be the host for the 2015 Telus Cup west regional championship.
The event will consist of the champions of the Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ and Saskatchewan AAA Midget Hockey Leagues, a team from northwestern Ontario and the host Parkland Rangers competing for a spot in the 2015 Telus Cup national midget championship.
Dauphin has recently played host to the 2010 RBC Cup national junior A championship and the 2014 Western Canada Cup.
The Telus Cup west regionals will take place April 2-5 at Credit Union Place in Dauphin.
Kings ransom for Piccolino
The MJHL’s Dauphin Kings have been able to add four players to the roster for 20-year-old goaltender Jordan Piccolino.
Earlier this month, the junior ‘A’ club shipped Piccolino to the AJHL’s Olds Grizzlys for 20-year-old blueliner Jordan Lajimodiere and Marc Eremenko.
On Friday, the Kings ended up dealing Eremenko and future considerations to the AJHL’s Drayton Valley Thunder for 19-year-old forward Dylan Bredahl, 18-year-old forward Mathiew Lapointe, and 18-year-old defenceman Connor Vermeulen.
Stallard signs with Flyers
Jordy Stallard of Brandon has inked a deal with the MJHL’s Winkler Flyers for next season.
Stallard was a member of the pennant-winning Brandon Wheat Kings last season in the Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ AAA Midget Hockey League. As a 16-year-old this past season, the forward had 28 goals and 48 assists in 44 games.
Barbs win Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ Cup
The Brandon Barbarians won the Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ Cup rugby championship on Sunday, defeating the University of Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ Wombats 51-31 in the final.
Brandon went undefeated in what is considered an early tournament of the season for the Barbarians.
Brandon opens their MRU Division 1 regular season on Sunday when they host the Winnipeg Highlanders.
Rice makes the cut
Landon Rice of Brandon has made the Hamilton Tiger-Cats roster to open the Canadian Football League season.
Rice, 26, spent all of last season on the Ti-Cats practice roster.
The offensive lineman and former member of the University of Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ Bisons signed as a free agent last spring.
