Weekend sports wrap: Tigers win provincial fastpitch championship

The following is a recap of what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .

Tigers win provincial fastpitch championship

The Neepawa Tigers won the provincial girls high school fastpitch championship over the weekend.

The Tigers defeated the Lorette Scorpions 12-2 in the championship final on Saturday in Altona.

After losing 3-1 to Killarney in their first game on Friday morning, the second seeded Tigers rebounded with a 12-9 win over Morden and a tightly-contested 11-10 victory over Stonewall later that day.

On Saturday, the Tigers advanced to the playoffs where they edged the host WC Miller Aces 12-11 in a quarter-final and would later double up the No. 1 seed Portage Saints 14-7 to advance to the final.

Amy Todoruk of the Tigers was named the tournament MVP, while Taylor Allen and Emma Schmall were named all-stars.

The rest of the Tigers roster includes Brooke Anderson, Robyn Birch, Marissa Crooke, Emily Dobson, Dana Friesen, Jenna Heschuk, Kendra Kostenchuk, Abby Krzyzaniak, Jayme Kulbacki, Sydney McLaughlin and Cecily Taylor.

Meanwhile, the Brandon-based Vincent Massey Vikings won the provincial boys high school baseball championship on Saturday, defeating the WC Miller Aces 12-2 in the final.

Marshal Burgess pitched a complete game five-hitter for the Vikings in the championship final. He wound up getting named the tournament MVP.

Jordan Stallard, Jordan Robertson and Mitchell Lyall of the Vikings were named tournament all-stars.

 

MSBL: Farmers fall to Rockets

The Neepawa Farmers dropped a 12-9 decision to the Reston Rockets in what was a championship final rematch in Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ Senior Baseball League action on Sunday night.

Buddy Mayert, Mitch Olson, Andrew Lochhead, Eric Truscott and Zane Sawyer all drove in two runs for the Rockets in the win.

Cole Stober picked up the win on the mound, allowing two hits, while striking out seven batters in six scoreless innings.

Farmers pitcher Jason Kirkland took the loss as he was chased from the game in the second inning, allowing seven runs – six of which were earned.

Cam Tibbett went 4-for-5 for the host Farmers with two runs scored and three RBI.

The Farmers now sit with a 1-1 record.

The other game on Sunday saw the Brandon Cloverleafs destroy the Oak River Dodgers 16-4 at Andrews Field.

The win by the Cloverleafs comes after they defeated the Rockets 8-4 on Friday night. The other contest that night saw the Brandon Marlins get by the Dodgers in Oak River 6-3.

 

Boxshall helps mixed team win

Neepawa's James Boxshall was a member of the Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ mixed team that won the gold medal at the Canadian five-pin bowling championship in Calgary over the weekend.

Boxshall averaged 225.3 pins in his three playoff games as Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ defeated Ontario in the semifinals before taking down Saskatchewan in the championship final.

The mixed team also included Brandon's Nicole Sentner.

Meanwhile, Brandon's Garry Hamm bowled back-to-back 300-games en route to winning the men's singles stepadder final, defeating Quebec's Sylvain Bercier in the semifinal and Ontario's Mitch Davies in the final.

Last but not least, the Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ men's team, which included Minnedosa's Brandon Mansell, wound up finishing seventh overall in their respective event.

 

Kings advance to Stanley Cup final

The Los Angeles Kings advanced to the Stanley Cup final on Sunday night.

Alec Martinez scored the overtime winner as the Kings defeated the Blackhawks 5-4 in Chicago in Game 7 of the Western Conference final.

The Kings will now battle the New York Rangers for Lord Stanley's mug. The series gets underway on Wednesday night in LA.


Brown, Lee win at CN Future Links

Andrew Brown of Calgary shot a three-over par 75 to win the junior boys title at the CN Future Links Prairie Golf Championship at the Shilo Golf Course on Sunday.

Brown's one-under 215 total score at the event was five shots better than Owen Xiong of West Vancouver and Zach Sackett of Winnipeg. Both finished in second place with a four-over 220 final score.

Austin Dobrescu of Brandon was the top Westman golfer, finishing at plus-17, good for a tie for 21st place.

Meanwhile, Jaclyn Lee, also of Calgary, won the junior girls title, finishing the event with a two-under 214 total score.


Wytinck, Fox, Tokle move on

Three Westman players made the cut at Golf Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ's match-play qualifier over the weekend.

Josh Wytinck of Glenboro shot an even-par 144 in the 36-hole event to finish in second place, three strokes behind leader Aaron Cockerill of the Elmhurst Golf and Country Club.

Meanwhile, Trevor Fox of Dauphin shot a 145 to finish in a tie for third, while Brandon's Mark Tokle ended up in a tie for 28th place with a total score of 158.

Wytinck, Fox and Tokle advance to the match play matches, which take place June 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15 at Winnipeg's Bel Acres Golf and Country Club.


Onyshko wins gold

Brandon's Isabela Onyshko took home some hardware at the Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Ottawa.

The 15-year-old, who was born in Minnedosa, won gold in the beam and silver medals in the all-around and bars events.

This was the first time Onyshko took part in the national championships in the senior age group.


Bombers, CFL camps open despite labour dispute

The CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the rest of the teams around the league have opened training camps despite the current labour dispute between the owners and the players union.

The previous collective bargaining agreement expired last Thursday.
