The following is a recap of what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .
Terriers win RBC Cup
The Yorkton Terriers are this year's RBC Cup national junior 'A' hockey champions.
Russell product Derek Falloon netted the overtime winner as the Terriers edged the Carleton Place Canadians 4-3 on Sunday in the championship final in Vernon, B.C.
Falloon jammed a loose puck through the pads of Canadians goaltender Guillaume Therien which ended up just inches across the goal line, as the Terriers won their first ever national junior 'A' title.
It was an incredible comeback for the Terriers, who overcame a 3-1 deficit with less than three minutes to go in the third period as Tanner Lischynsky and Dylan Johnson scored eight seconds apart to tie the contest at three apiece.
The Terriers, who lost their first two round robin contests at the event, ended up having to win four do-or-die games in five days in order to take home the title. Yorkton is also the first SJHL team to win the RBC Cup since Humboldt in 2008.
The Terriers advanced the championship game after doubling up the host Vernon Vipers 6-3 in a semifinal, while the Canadians took down the MJHL's Dauphin Kings 5-3 in the other semi.
The Kings roster included former Neepawa Native Brayden Cuthbert, who ended up netting two goals in five games at the event.
"We knew Carleton Place was a good team, and it was going to be a tough game to win," said Cuthbert regarding the semifinal loss. "We had a good first two periods but our third wasn't good enough to win us that game."
Cuthbert and the Kings finished with a 3-1 round robin record at the event, good for first place in the standings, before losing to Carleton Place on Saturday in the playoffs.
Overall, Cuthbert says the season was an amazing experience.
"Especially the second half [of the year]. We did great as a team, and individually I did well which is always a bonus," he continued.
Cuthbert is eligible to return to the Kings next season for his overage year.
Kings' Stiliadis named MVP, top goaltender
Dauphin Kings netminder Michael Stiliadis was named the RBC Cup MVP and top goaltender at a banquet on Friday.
Stiliadis finished the event with a 3-2 mark overall, with a 2.32 goals against average and a .930 save percentage.
The top forward and top scorer awards went to Colton Sparrow of the Vernon Vipers; Michael Prapavessis of the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots took home the top defenceman award, while Brett D'Andrea of the Canadians was named the most sportsmanlike player.
Meanwhile, Brandon product Mitch Van Teeling of the Kings was named an RBC Cup legacy scholarship winner. The $500 scholarship is awarded to one graduating player from each of the five participating teams.
Memorial Cup: Oil Kings pick up win
The WHL's Edmonton Oil Kings picked up a win at the 2014 Memorial Cup junior hockey championship, defeating the host London Knights 5-2 on Sunday night.
Edgars Kulda had two goals and an assist for the Oil Kings (1-1) in the win.
The Oil Kings dropped a 5-2 decision to the OHL's Guelph Storm in their first game of the event on Saturday.
The Oil Kings will take on the Val-d'Or Foreurs on Tuesday night.
