Weekend sports wrap: Lisoway, Wheat Kings down 2-0 to Oil Kings; Fordyce, Waterhouse fall in Dominion finals

The following is a recap of what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .

Lisoway, Wheat Kings shut out again

Neepawa's Quintin Lisoway and the Brandon Wheat Kings were shut out for a second straight game, falling 3-0 to the Edmonton Oil Kings on Saturday afternoon in Game 2 of their Western Hockey League Eastern Conference semifinal series.

Edgars Kulda scored twice, while Oil Kings netminder Tristan Jarry turned aside 29 shots en route to the win. Ashton Sautner netted the other tally for the two-time defending Eastern Conference champion Oil Kings, who now have a two-game lead in the best-of-seven series. Brandon lost 5-0 in Game 1 of the series on Thursday.

Wheat Kings rookie netminder Jordan Papirny was busy, making 54 saves in the loss. The 17-year-old has turned aside 94 of 102 shots directed his way in the first two games of the series.

Game 3 and 4 of the series will take place Tuesday and Wednesday in Brandon at Westman Place. Both games get underway at 7 p.m.

Lisoway watch: The forward remains with two assists in six playoff games.


Fordyce, Waterhouse fall in Dominion finals

The Dominion Club provincial curling championships wrapped up on Sunday in East St. Paul.

On the women's side, Brandon's Stacey Fordyce lost 9-4 to Tracy Andries of Fort Rouge in the championship final.

Andries defeated Jackie Komyshyn's rink from Rossmere to advance to the final, while Fordyce edged Carberry's Pam Robins 6-4 in the other semifinal.

Neepawa's Darla Hanke took part in the event and finished with a 3-2 record, failing to make the playoffs.

Meanwhile, on the men's side, Carberry's Rod Waterhouse lost 5-2 to Kerry Fedorchuk of Petersfield in the final.

Fedorchuk defeated Neil Bugg's rink from Boissevain 6-2 to advance to the championship final, while Waterhouse got past Brandon's Steve Irwin 6-5 in the other semifinal.

Both Andries and Fedorchuk will go on to represent 水果视频 at the Dominion national curling club championship.


Blues win Game 1 of MJHL final

The Winnipeg Blues have struck first in the 水果视频 Junior Hockey League championship final, picking up a 6-1 win over Dauphin Kings Sunday night.

The host Blues jumped out front 1-0 early and never looked back, holding period leads of 1-0 and 3-1 after 40 minutes.

The Blues were led offensively by Liam Bilton, who scored a pair of tallies, while Garret Browning, Taeron Lewis, Warren Callis and Channing Bresciani also picked up goals. The Blues took full advantage with the man advantage, going three for eight on the power play.

The Kings lone goal came from Mitch Van Teeling. The loss was Dauphin's first playoff defeat as the club swept their first two rounds of playoff action against OCN and Virden.

Game 2 of the best-of-seven series resumes Tuesday in Dauphin.


Jets play spoiler; take down Maple Leafs

The Winnipeg Jets played the role of spoiler on Saturday night in Toronto against the Maple Leafs in NHL action.

Bryan Little, Jacob Trouba, Tobias Enstrom and Olli Jokinen scored for the Jets, who doubled up the Leafs 4-2. The loss was a critical one for the Leafs, who are now on life support to make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference.

The Jets (35-34-10) meanwhile, were eliminated from playoff contention late last week.


Sanheim named to Canadian national U-18 training camp

Former Yellowhead Chief Travis Sanheim is currently among the 22 players taking part in Canada's national men's under-18 training camp in Toronto.

The camp serves as part of Canada鈥檚 preparations for the 2014 IIHF U-18 world championship, which will be held April 17-27 in Lapeenranta and Imatra, Finland.

Canada is the defending champion at the world championship, having won its third gold medal last year in Sochi, Russia.

Sanheim, from Elkhorn, is a member of the WHL's Calgary Hitmen. The blueliner was named a co-winner of the Hitmen's rookie of the year award, scoring five goals and 29 points in 67 regular season games.


Hawks fall to Goldwings

The Pembina Valley Hawks dropped a 3-0 decision to the Weyburn Goldwings in the third and deciding game of the western regional female midget hockey championship on Sunday.

The Goldwings will now advance to the Esso Cup national female midget hockey championship, which begins later this month in Stoney Creek and Hamilton, Ont.


Koe falls in bronze medal game

Kevin Koe and his Canadian foursome ended up settling for fourth place at the world men's curling championship in Beijing on Sunday.

Koe and his rink, which included Brandon product Nolan Thiessen, lost 7-5 to Switzerland in the bronze medal game.

Norway won gold, defeating Sweden 8-3 in the championship final.
