Weekend sports wrap: Moar named captain of Natives; Carey wins Scotties

The following is a recap of what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .

Natives fall to Steelers in home-and-home set; Moar takes over as captain

The Neepawa Natives played a home-and-home set with the Selkirk Steelers on Friday and Sunday night and wound up losing both of their games.

On Friday night, Kolby Woods scored twice and added an assist as the Steelers defeated the Natives 8-1 in Selkirk.

Justin Coachman scored the lone goal for the Natives on the power play at the 13:44 mark of the second period.

Erik Pushka, Soren Fredriksen, Adam Wowryk, Dallas Starodub, Rhett Lough and Tyler Kauk scored the other goals for the Steelers, who received a 24 save performance from netminder Nathan Park en route to the victory.

Matthieu Verreault made 22 saves between the pipes for Neepawa.

On Sunday, the Steelers scored twice in the opening period and wound up coming away with a 3-0 win over the Natives in Neepawa.

Parker Thomas and Erik Pushka scored in the first period, while Kolby Woods netted an empty netter late in the contest for the Steelers, who improved to a league leading 33-6-2 on the year.

The Natives meanwhile, dropped to 10-29-4 this season and are in last place in the Sher-Wood Division, only two points back of the Waywayseecappo Wolverines for the fifth and final playoff spot.

Steelers goaltender Nathan Park ended up getting the shutout, making 25 saves in the process, while Tyson Verhelst turned aside 40 of 42 shots between the pipes for Neepawa.

Moar named captain

The Natives named 20-year-old forward Robby Moar their new captain. The decision comes after the club traded Ryley Pace to the Superior International Junior Hockey League's English River Miners last Thursday.

Moar has scored four goals, nine assists for 13 points in 42 games for the Natives this season.

"Robby has been a dedicated member of the team for sometime," said Natives general manager Myles Cathcart. "He always works his hardest and leads by example. He is an outstanding role model for younger players showing what it takes to play in the league. Robby is a well respected teammate, great  community member, has great character and professionally goes about his business."


Kings busy prior to MJHL trade deadline

There were several roster moves that took place prior to the 水果视频 Junior Hockey League trade deadline on Friday night.

The Dauphin Kings, who currently sit in a tie for first place in the Sher-Wood Division, were busy making three deals during the day. The junior 'A' club added Souris product Hudson Morrison from the SJHL's LaRonge Ice Wolves in exchange for 20-year-old forward Daulton Siwak.

The Kings also made a change between the pipes, acquiring 19-year-old goaltender Jordan Piccolino from the Central Canada Hockey League's Cornwall Colts for 19-year-old forward Tommy Hrazdira and future considerations. The Kings would later ship 19-year-old netminder Brian Archibald to the OCN Blizzard for future considerations.

Carey wins Scotties

Chelsea Carey is this year's provincial women's curling champion.

Carey and her team defeated Kerri Einarson 6-2 in the championship final of the Scotties Tournament of Hearts on Sunday in Virden at Tundra Oil and Gas Place.

Carey took control of the game after scoring three in the ninth end. This is Carey's first provincial championship win.

Carey, third Kristy McDonald, second Kristen Foster and lead Lindsay Titheridge, will now represent 水果视频 at the 2014 Canadian Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Feb. 1-9 in Montreal.

Einarson and her teammate Kristin MacCuish were named the all-star skip and lead at the event.

Second Jenna Loder and third Katie Spencer of Barb Spencer's team were the other all-stars.

It was also announced over the weekend that next year's Scotties will be held in Winkler, pending finalization of contract details. The provincial women鈥檚 championship will be played in the Winkler Centennial Arena Jan. 21-25, 2015.

Meanwhile, in other curling news, Jeff Stoughton ended up edging Kevin Martin to win the Travelers All-Star curling Skins Championship on Sunday. Stoughton wound up winning more than $70,000 in prize money.

 

Wheat Kings take two of possible four points against Raiders

The visiting Prince Albert Raiders scored three goals in the second period Friday night en route to a 4-3 win over the Wheat Kings in the opening game of a two-game Western Hockey League weekend series at Westman Communications Group Place.

Ryan Pulock, Jens Meilleur and John Quenneville scored in a losing cause for the Wheat Kings, who outshot Prince Albert 39-26 including 17-2 in the third period.

The Wheat Kings closed out the weekend series with the visiting Raiders Saturday night with an impressive 5-2 victory.

Tied at two through 40 minutes of play, the Wheat Kings ended up netting three third period goals in a span of 3:19 en route to the win, splitting the two game set.

John Quenneville scored twice, while Jesse Gabrielle, Rihards Bukarts and Eric Roy netted the other tallies for the Wheat Kings, who now sit with a 23-17-4-0 record and are in sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

 

Farmers fall to Clippers; rebound against Cougars

The Neepawa Farmers lost 3-2 to the Cartwright Clippers in Tiger Hills Hockey League action on Friday night.

Bryan White and Brett Dreger scored for Neepawa in the loss.

The Farmers were able to rebound on Saturday with a 5-4 win over the Swan Lake Cougars.

Lance Nugent netted a hat-trick for Neepawa en route to the win.

Eric Jury and Chris Belisle scored the other goals for the Farmers, who now sit with a 5-11-1-0 record and remain in last place in the Eastern Division.


BU review: Bobcats men's basketball team wins both games

The Brandon University men's basketball team picked up a pair of victories over the weekend.

The Bobcats edged the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack 74-70 on Friday night. Jordan Reaves led the way offensively with 17 points. On Saturday, the Bobcats ended up defeating the UBC-Okanagan Heat 74-66. Ali-Mounir had a game-high 21 points for the Bobcats in the win.

The Bobcats now sit with a 4-8 record in the Canada West and are six points back of the final playoff spot in the Prairie Division.

The BU women's team ended up losing on Friday night to Thompson Rivers 62-59, but were able to rebound on Saturday, defeating UBC-Okanagan 70-63. The BU women's team now sits with a 3-9 record.

Meanwhile, the BU men's volleyball team dropped a five-set decision to Thompson Rivers on Friday and followed that up with a straight sets loss to the Wolfpack on Saturday. The BU men's volleyball team now sits with a 7-7 record on the year.

The BU women's squad meanwhile, won both of their games against Thompson Rivers and now sit with an 11-3 record, which is good for second place in the standings.


Chiefs defeat Thistles in Neepawa

The Yellowhead Chiefs defeated the Kenora Thistles 4-1 in 水果视频 AAA Midget Hockey League action on Saturday night in Neepawa.

Tanner Koroscil, Dayton Heino, Tyler Dereniwski and Ashton Anderson scored for Yellowhead in the win.

On Sunday, the Chiefs hosted the Interlake Lightning in Shoal Lake and wound up falling 2-1.

Morgan Geekie scored the lone goal for the Chiefs, who now sit with a 15-16-0-2 record.

Meanwhile, the Brandon AAA Wheat Kings won their 30th game of the season on Sunday, defeating the Winnipeg Wild 3-2 in a shootout.

The Wheat Kings now sit with a 30-3-0-1 record and are one point ahead of the Wild for first place in the standings.


Jets fire Noel; hire Maurice

The Winnipeg Jets fired coach Claude Noel on Sunday and replaced him with Paul Maurice.

The NHL club, who lost 6-3 to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night, are currently 10 points behind the last playoff spot in the Western Conference.

鈥淚t became apparent over the last little while here that things are not trending in the right direction, and we were going to have to do something to try and move things back into a fashion of moving forward,鈥 said Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff at a press conference on Sunday afternoon.

Maurice has head coaching experience with the Carolina Hurricanes and the Toronto Maple Leafs and has a career record of 460-457-167.

The Jets also relieved assistant coach Perry Pearn of his duties as well.


Lawrence, Swiegers off to Olympics

The Virden-based figure skating pair of Paige Lawrence and Rudi Swiegers are headed to the Olympics.

Lawrence and Swiegers ended up skating to a third place finish in the senior pairs competition at the national figure skating championship in Ottawa on Saturday, collecting 176.31 points in total.

The top three teams earned spots on the Canadian Olympic squad who will head to Sochi, Russia in February.
