Weekend sports wrap: Natives pick up win over Stampeders

The following is a recap of what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .

Natives double up Stamps

The Neepawa Natives picked up a much-needed 6-3 victory over the Swan Valley Stampeders on Sunday night at the Yellowhead Centre, snapping a six-game losing streak in the process.

Luke Karakas scored the lone goal in the first period, giving the Natives a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

Bo Sigurdson would tied the game for the Stampeders at the 3:31 mark of the second before Riley Kolesar scored on the power play for the Natives a little more than two minutes later.

The two teams would swap goals – Brayden MacDonald of the Stampeders at the 8:18 mark followed by Nicholas Sandy (9:27) – before Max Flanagan would score the tying goal for the Stampeders on the power play late in the second period.

The Natives however took control in the third period on goals from Riley Hillis, Jaret Smith on the power play and Colton Magwood shorthanded late in the contest.

Karakas' goal and two assists were good enough for the 20-year-old forward to be named the first star of the game.

Matthieu Verreault, who was recently added to the Natives roster, picked up the win in net for Neepawa, making 33 saves, while Graham Hunt ended up taking the loss between the pipes, turning aside 37 of 43 shots.

This was the Natives first game after a lengthy nine-day Christmas break. The Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ Junior Hockey League club now sits with a 10-24-4 record and are currently two points up on the Waywayseecappo Wolverines for fifth place in the Sher-Wood Division.

Natives notes

- Verreault, a 20-year-old goaltender from Cochrane, Ont. who spent time with the Waywayseecappo Wolverines earlier in the year, joined back-up Brady Plett as the two dressed goaltenders for the Natives for Sunday's game against Swan Valley.

The two netminders are the current replacements for Davy Fisher and rookie Tyson Verhelst. Fisher is currently recovering from an upper body injury and Verhelst is currently in Cape Breton, N.S. as a member of Team West at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

- Natives captain Ryley Pace remains sidelined with a shoulder injury. The 20-year-old blueliner suffered the injury in a game on Dec. 4.

Verhelst helps lead Team West to convincing exhibition win

Neepawa Natives netminder Tyson Verhelst along with Logan Flodell combined to make 22 saves, helping Team West defeat Germany 7-1 on Saturday night in an exhibition game ahead of the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Nova Scotia.

Jesse Gabrielle of the Brandon Wheat Kings scored two goals and added an assist to lead the way offensively for Team West.

Team West begins preliminary game action on Monday night against Team Pacific.

Lisoway picks up assist as Wheat Kings blank Pats

Neepawa's own Quintin Lisoway picked up an assist, helping the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings defeat the Regina Pats 8-0 on Friday night at Westman Communications Group Place.

Jordan Papirny picked up the shutout in net for Brandon, stopping all 30 Regina shots.

Rihards Bukarts scored twice and added an assist for the Wheat Kings in the win.

On Saturday, the Wheat Kings travelled to Regina to conclude a home-and-home set with the Pats and ended up falling by a score of 8-4.

Tim McGauley scored twice for Brandon in the loss.

The Wheat Kings now sit with a 19-15-3-0 record and are currently in sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

Lisoway currently has two goals, 10 assists for 12 points this season.

Chiefs fall to Cougars in shootout

The Yellowhead Chiefs lost 3-2 to the Southwest Cougars in a shootout in Ë®¹ûÊÓƵ AAA Midget Hockey League action on Sunday.

Michael Fortin tied the game with less than two minutes remaining in the third period and ended up scoring the shootout winner for the Cougars, who improved to 14-13-0-2 this season.

Tanner Koroscil and Morgan Geekie scored the regulation goals for the Chiefs, who dropped to 13-14-0-2 this year.

Idonije placed on injured reserve

Brandon product Israel Idonije was placed on injured reserve by the NFL' Detroit Lions on Friday, officially ending his 2013 season.

He didn't play in the Lions season finale on Sunday, which was a 14-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Jets defeat Wild, Avalanche in OT

The Winnipeg Jets had a successful weekend in NHL action, winning both of their games on Friday and Sunday night.

On Friday, Blake Wheeler scored twice, helping the Jets defeat the Minnesota Wild 6-4. Wheeler also scored the overtime winner in overtime on Sunday, helping the Jets defeat the Colorado Avalanche 2-1.

The Jets now sit with a 18-18-5 record.

Farmers defeat Cartwright; lose to Carberry

The Neepawa Farmers played two games over the weekend in Tiger Hills Hockey League action.

Cam Tibbett scored twice, helping the Farmers defeat the Cartwright Clippers 6-1 on Friday night at the Yellowhead Centre.

Neil Ernest, Bryan White, Brett Dreger and Eric Jury scored the other tallies for Neepawa in the win.

On Saturday, the Farmers travelled to Carberry and wound up falling 3-2 to the Plainsmen.

Bryan White and Lance Nugent scored the goals for the Farmers, who dropped to 4-9-1 this season and remain in last place in the Eastern Division standings.

BU men's basketball team taking part in Wesmen Classic

The Brandon University men's basketball team is taking part in the Wesmen Classic basketball tournament in Winnipeg.

The Bobcats defeated the Dickinson State Blue Hawks 67-54 on Sunday.

The Bobcats will play in a consolation final on Monday.

Curling: provincial junior curling championships taking place

The provincial junior men's and women's curling championships are currently taking place in Portage.

Defending champion Matt Dunstone sits with a perfect 6-0 record in the Black Group standings at the junior men's event, while Cole Peters is 6-0 in the Red Group standings.

Meanwhile, defending champion Shannon Birchard remains undefeated in the junior women's event.

The events wrap up on Tuesday.
