Weekend sports wrap: Natives deal Cuthbert; Westman teams win provincial high school volleyball titles

The following is a recap of what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .

Natives play three games in three nights

The Neepawa Natives were busy over the weekend, playing three games in three nights.

On Friday night, the 水果视频 Junior Hockey League club traveled to OCN to battle the Blizzard and ended up falling 5-0.

Tyler Grove ended up with a hat-trick on the night, while Rhett Law and Darien Cardinal scored the other tallies for the Blizzard in the win.

Former Native Alex Henry turned aside all 37 shots to pick up the shutout, while Davy Fisher stopped 29 of 34 shots between the pipes for Neepawa.

On Saturday, the Natives headed to Swan Valley to take on the Stampeders and once again, came up empty on the stat sheet, falling by a score of 5-0.

Nic Erb and Carter Johnson each scored twice, while Max Flanagan also netted a tally for the Stampeders.

Stampeders netminder Nathan Armstrong stopped all 22 shots to pick up the shutout, while Tyson Verhelst made 46 saves in net for Neepawa.

On Sunday, the Natives came back home to host the Winkler Flyers and wound up dropping a 5-3 decision in front of more than 350 people at the Yellowhead Centre.

Drake Lindsay, Robby Moar and Matti Jmaeff scored for Neepawa in a losing cause.

Adam Vander Linden stopped 38 of 41 shots to pick up the win in net for Winkler, while Davy Fisher ended up with the loss, making 32 saves between the pipes for Neepawa.

The Natives have dropped five games in a row in regulation and now sit with a 7-17-4 record.

Natives notes: club deal Cuthbert; Pace returns

The Natives pulled the trigger on their second significant trade in less than a week over the weekend.

Neepawa traded 19-year-old forward Brayden Cuthbert to the Dauphin Kings for 20-year-olds Michael Sofillas, Colton Magwood and a fifth round pick in the 2014 MJHL Bantam Draft.

Sofillas, from Morden, has four goals, nine assists for 13 points in 24 games for the Kings. Listed at 5-foot-8 and 175 pounds, the forward spent time in the Western Hockey League with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, playing more than 100 games with the club from 2010-2012.

Magwood, from Killarney, is a left-handed shooting blueliner who has four assists in 21 games with Dauphin. At 6-foot-1, 240 pounds, Magwood also has 90 penalty minutes this season.

鈥淲hen you move guys like Sofillas and Magwood, it鈥檚 never an easy thing to do," said Kings head coach and general manager Marlin Murray in a release. "They're both very good players and even better people."

Cuthbert, from Brandon, has spent the past season and a half in Neepawa, appearing in 63 games.

This year, Cuthbert netted eight goals, seven assists for 15 points with the Natives.

Before coming to Neepawa, Cuthbert played 39 games with the WHL's Moose Jaw Warriors.

The deal took place prior to the MJHL's Dec. 1 roster deadline, which limits member clubs to 25 player cards.

Meanwhile, Natives captain Ryley Pace returned to the lineup on Saturday against the Stampeders.

The 20-year-old blueliner has been out of game action since mid-October when he suffered a torn MCL in a game against the Waywayseecappo Wolverines.

There were a few other deals prior to the deadline. They are as follows . . .

- The OCN Blizzard acquired 20-year-old defenceman Chris Kravchuk from the AJHL's Drayton Valley Thunder for future considerations.

- The Swan Valley Stampeders traded 20-year-old defenceman Luke Fenske to the Steinbach Pistons for future considerations.

- The Steinbach Pistons traded 18-year-old defenceman Braden Pettinger and the MJHL list rights of 16-year-old forward Shane Roulette to the Waywayseecappo Wolverines for a first round draft pick in the 2014 MJHL Bantam Draft and future considerations.

 - The Portage Terriers traded 19-year-old defenceman Braeden Jones to the AJHL's Grande Prairie Storm for 19-year-old Simon Desrosiers and future considerations.

- The Portage Terriers acquired 18-year-old defenceman Alex Dajia from the NOJHL's North Bay Trappers for future considerations.

- The Virden Oil Capitals traded 18-year-old goaltender Justin Holder and 19-year-old defenceman Des Bast to the Waywayseecappo Wolverines for future considerations.

Wheat Kings defeat Warriors; fall to Raiders

The Brandon Wheat Kings went 1-1 over the weekend in Western Hockey League action.

Second year center John Quenneville enjoyed a career night Friday as the Wheat Kings kicked off a busy weekend with an 8-4 victory over the Warriors in Moose Jaw.

Quenneville scored twice and set up three others for the Wheat Kings, who stormed back from a 2-0 deficit with five second period goals en route to the victory, snapping Brandon's three-game losing streak.

Jayce Hawryluk added two goals and two assists for the Wheat Kings in the win.

On Saturday, the Prince Albert Raiders staged a third period rally to beat the Wheat Kings 5-4 in front of 3,607 fans at Westman Communications Group Place.

Trailing 4-2 with less than seven minutes to play, the Raiders scored twice including the equalizer with 11.1 seconds remaining to force overtime and proceeded to to win the game on Sawyer Lange's third goal of the season.

Chad Robinson, John Quenneville, Tim McGauley and Rihards Bukarts scored for Brandon in the loss.

The Wheat Kings now sit with a 14-13-2-0 record on the season.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, Team White defeated Team Black at the Wheat Kings annual skills day at Westman Communications Group Place.

Ryan Pilon, who was acquired from the Lethbridge Hurricanes last month captured the accuracy event by hitting four of five targets to edge out Tim McGauley and captain Ryan Pulock. Both hit four of six targets in the event.

Pulock won the hardest shot event for the second straight season with a shot of 101 mph, matching last year's record breaking performance.

The winner of the other individual award was Minnedosa's Chad Robinson, who won the fastest skating event with an impressive time of 12.5 seconds, which bettered last year's winning time of 12.84 set by Swiss forward Alessio Bertaggia.

Meanwhile, Jayce Hawryluk teamed up with JohnQuenneville and Tim McGauley to lead Team White to a win in the trick shot competition.

 

Westman teams win provincial high school titles

Three high school varsity volleyball teams from the Westman area won provincial titles over the weekend.

The Elton Sabers won the provincial AA girls title by defeating the Killarney Raiders in straight sets in the championship final.

The Hamiota Huskies won the provincial A boys championship on their home court, defeating the Glenboro Panthers in straight sets in the final.

It was the Huskies first ever A boys title.

The Glenboro Panthers won the A girls championship, defeating the Gilbert Plains Trojans in three sets in the final.

Meanwhile, the Brandon-based Neelin Spartans finished in third place at the AAA boys event.


BU review: Bobcats women's volleyball team now at 9-3

The Brandon University women's volleyball team now sits with a 9-3 record after splitting the two games they played over the weekend against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

The Lady 'Cats defeated the Huskies in four sets on Friday and followed that up with a five set loss on Saturday.

Leading the way on both nights for the Bobcats was Shanlee McLennan, with 18 kills, five digs and a service ace on Friday and then picking up 15 kills, 13 digs and two blocks on Saturday.

The men's volleyball team meanwhile, went 1-1 as well over the weekend against the Huskies and now sit with a 7-5 record.

Turning to basketball, the BU men's squad picked up a 65-61 win on Friday night in Calgary against the Dinos to improve to 2-8, while the women's squad dropped a 73-53 decision to the Dinos and now sit with the same record as the men's team at 2-8 overall.


Chiefs double up Selects, lose to Thrashers

The Yellowhead Chiefs defeated the Eastman Selects 4-2 in Shoal Lake on Saturday in 水果视频 AAA Midget Hockey League action.

Tanner Koroscil scored twice, while Morgan Geekie and Logan Robinson also netted tallies for Yellowhead in the win. 

On Sunday, the Chiefs hosted the Winnipeg Thrashers and wound up falling by a score of 4-0.

The Chiefs currently sit with a 10-10-0 record.

Jets fall to Flyers

The Winnipeg Jets dropped a 2-1 decision to the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday.

Michael Frolik scored the lone goal for Winnipeg in the third period. Scott Hartnell and Sean Couturier scored for the Flyers.

The Jets now sit with a 12-12-4 record and will continue their longest road trip of the season on Monday against the New York Rangers.


Curling: Roar of the Rings begins; Calvert earns provincial junior event

The Roar of the Rings Canadian curling trials began on Sunday at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg.

There are eight men's teams and eight women's squads vying for the opportunity to represent Canada at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

The event has some Westman ties as it includes skip Mike McEwen from Brandon as well as Nolan Thiessen, also from Brandon, who is the lead for Kevin Koe's team.

The event is being aired on TSN throughout the week and included legendary broadcaster   who helped out from time to time with the network on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Kylee Calvert of Carberry and her curling team earned a berth into the junior women's provincial curling championship.

Calvert and her team of Rianna Ton, Hayley Surovy and Camille Lough won a regional event on Saturday in Souris to claim a spot in the provincial event, which takes place later this month.

Lastly, Carberry's Kelly Marnoch and his curling team won the 水果视频 Curling Tour championship on Sunday, defeating Brandon's William Lyburn 6-5 in the men's final.

Meanwhile, Joelle Brown and her team defeated Michelle Montford 6-2 in the women's final.

Marnoch and Brown both earned berths into their respective provincial curling championships with the win.
